The Matalascañas beach hosts the 16th edition of the Andalucía Desafío Doñana this Saturday, with 319 registered athletes and two Spanish Championships that place the Huelva coast on the national sports map.
Today, Saturday, October 17, Matalascañas is experiencing one of its great sporting days of the year. The 2026 Andalucía Desafío Doñana brings hundreds of athletes to the Huelva coast to face one of the most prominent endurance tests on the Andalusian calendar, in an especially relevant edition that incorporates the Spanish Long-Distance Triathlon and Aquabike Championships.
In its sixteenth edition, the Desafío Doñana takes a step forward with 319 registered athletes and three modalities that share the same setting: the privileged environment of Matalascañas, in the municipality of Almonte, next to the Doñana natural area. In addition to the two national championships, the Middle-Distance competition is once again eligible for the National Ranking of this modality.
Swimming, cycling, and running in front of the Doñana environment.
One of the great attractions of the Desafío Doñana is its route, which combines physical effort with some of the most characteristic landscapes of the Huelva coast.
The Middle-Distance test begins with 1.9 kilometers of swimming at Torre de la Higuera beach, continues with 72 kilometers of cycling along the road that connects Matalascañas and Mazagón, and ends with 20 kilometers of running along Matalascañas beach and the dune environment of Doñana.
For those competing in the Spanish Long-Distance Triathlon Championship, the challenge is even greater: 3,000 meters of swimming, 110 kilometers by bicycle, and 30 kilometers of running. For its part, the Spanish Aquabike Championship includes the swimming and cycling segments, without running.
The first starts of the competition are scheduled from 8:15 a.m., with the beginning of the men's long-distance elite test. The day thus turns the beach and the roads of the area into points of reference for triathlon fans.
A sporting event that boosts tourism in Matalascañas.
Beyond the competition, the Andalucía Desafío Doñana represents an opportunity to promote Matalascañas as a sports and nature tourism destination.
The arrival of participants, companions, and fans helps to boost the town and show a facet of Matalascañas that goes far beyond sun and beach. Its proximity to Doñana, its extensive sandy areas, and its natural environment make it a unique setting to host national sporting events.
This type of event also allows visitors to discover the Huelva Coast at a different time of the year, with the possibility of combining sporting activity with walks by the Atlantic, local gastronomy, and getaways to enjoy the natural environment.
At ON Hotels Group, we like to highlight the current news of Matalascañas and the initiatives that contribute to keeping the destination alive throughout the year. Events like the Desafío Doñana show the town's ability to combine sport, nature, and tourism.
Sport and sustainability: the value of competing in a unique environment.
The Doñana environment is one of the main protagonists of this event, but it also demands a special responsibility. Part of the route runs through natural spaces of great ecological value, so respect for the environment is fundamental.
The organization has announced measures related to waste management, route cleaning, and reducing the carbon footprint. It is also working on evaluating the environmental impact of the event to move towards recognition as a "Sustainable Event."
The combination of high-level sport and environmental protection reinforces the importance of organizing competitions that allow enjoying the landscapes of Huelva without losing sight of their conservation.
Matalascañas, much more than a beach destination.
The 2026 Desafío Doñana is one more example of everything Matalascañas offers throughout the year. Its natural environment, its proximity to the Doñana National Park, and its location next to the Atlantic make it an attractive destination both for those looking to disconnect and for those who wish to enjoy outdoor activities.
Today, the town is once again at the center of national sports and demonstrates that tourism, nature, and sporting activity can share the spotlight in the same destination.
A day to cheer on the participants, enjoy the atmosphere, and discover why Matalascañas and Doñana form such a special combination in the province of Huelva.
At ON Hotels Group, we celebrate the events that bring Matalascañas to life and contribute to projecting everything our destination has to offer.
